Be Heard, Be Part of Research [Mar. 15th, 2012|03:21 pm]
Canada's Queer Community

My name is Rischa I'm a lesbian, doing research with our community.

I am passionate about research because professionals use studies like this one to make decisions about our health care.

For this study, we are looking for women (trans-community included)  18 years of age or older, who self-identify as lesbian, bisexual, queer, or questioning (LBQ).  The purpose of this study is to learn about gender presentation and substance use in LBQ women.

Make sure your experiences are heard, be a part of LBQ research!
You can complete a brief, anonymous 25-minute survey by going to www.lbqresearch.wordpress.com
This study had been approved by the St. John’s University IRB.  Thank you for your time.

Make sure your experiences are heard, be a part of LBQ research! Thank you for getting involved, and be sure to tell your friends to participate as well.

Let's be friends [Apr. 24th, 2011|09:26 pm]
Canada's Queer Community

Hey everyone, my name's Susan, I'm from Toronto, Ontario. I'm looking to meet some gay friends. I'm new to the gay community so needless to say all my friends are straight (that I know of).

A little about me:

I'm 23, pursuing my second degree, the first was in human biology and now I'm in a professional program where I'll graduate to take your x-rays. I love living in the city.
I enjoy play all kinds of sports such as badminton, squash, tennis, basketball, volleyball, muay thai, mma, and snowboarding.
I also love lazy days where I get to sit on the couch and watch re-runs or the food network.
Give me a shout! I love meeting new people and making new friends.

Spirit Day [Oct. 4th, 2010|06:47 pm]
Canada's Queer Community

It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools.

RIP Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh (top)
RIP Justin Aaberg, Raymond Chase (middle)
RIP Asher Brown and Billy Lucas. (bottom)

REBLOG to spread a message of love, unity and peace.

As part of my comming out process I am expanding my social network to LGBTQ people. I find that I am very isolated from the community and I wouldn't mind meeting people to share ideas with similar sexuality background.

In an effort to curb the ridiculous number of porn spammers in the last few days, I've changed the community settings to include moderated posting.  Sorry your friend's pages have been contaminated recently.

Looking for Participants in a Study! [Sep. 7th, 2010|10:48 am]
Canada's Queer Community

Hello everybody!

I haven't posted in here before, and I'm in the States, but I was referred over this way by another LJ member :) I'm working on a study with my professor (Dr. James Kaufman) and we are trying to get more LGBTQ people involved. If you would like to take part, more information and the links to two surveys are below.

This one relates to college admissions (so ideally, we're looking for college students, 18 years old and over).

This one is more about gender.

These aren't 15 minute surveys, so if you do want to take part, please allow yourself enough time to complete the survey. Of course, it is completely optional and you can quit at any time, but complete surveys are preferred. Also, this is completely anonymous in that we cannot tie your information back to you, so if you're afraid of being identified, you don't need to be :)

As before, if you have any questions or concerns, or want to hear the outcome of the study upon completion, please email me at whita309@csusb.edu.

Thank you!

(*mods, hope this is okay!)

Sexual and/or gender orientation (if you are comfortable sharing): Female, lesbian.

Brief discussion of gay scene where you are from: I'm pretty new to the scene but have always had a good time at The Lookout on a Friday for ladies night, as well I enjoy Saturday for the drag queen performances. The Edge is pretty chill but I find mostly populated by middle-aged men.
A tidbit of gossip or news (your own life or media): Just attended my first Toronto Pride and had the time of my life!
Your list of top 5 hottest celebrities: Angelina Jolie, Tegan Quin, Scarlett Johansson, Hayley Williams, Olivia Wilde.
Your favourite famous Canadian: The Quin Twins, Tegan and Sara! That counts as one, right?

A friendly request [Jul. 14th, 2010|11:31 pm]
Canada's Queer Community

To encourage members to open up discussion, I thought I'd invite you all to introduce yourself. Feel free to introduce yourself however you'd like. For your convenience, I'm providing an example intro outline. Use all or none of it, as you choose.

Name: Anne Marie
Age: 27
Sexual and/or gender orientation (if you are comfortable sharing): pansexual

Brief discussion of gay scene where you are from: It sucks, but at least we have one. There's The Lookout, which is mostly 40+ and has lesbian Fridays, The Edge which is a sketchy club aimed towards the early thirty-something and younger, and some sort of gay bars. Swizzles which is actually for everyone but aims to be inclusive and has karaoke and Zaphods which is also open and has a lot of funky music. We also have a small section of Bank St. which is supposedly "the village". Meaning, a couple of gay sex shops and a sketchy gay book store and more cafes with rainbow stickers than elsewhere. Funnily enough, you see more gay couples holding hands on Elgin.
Your list of top 5 hottest celebrities: Kate Walsh, Bruce Willis, and I'll get back to you... I'm sleepy and chemistry and personality count for so much more than you can see on tv.
Your favourite famous Canadian: There are too many to choose from. Tanya Huff is probably top of my list, though. She's an author and a lesbian. She's a solid writer and she cracks me up. William Shatner is awesome, especially in Boston Legal. Most of the Stargate Atlantis cast. Katia Grubisic who is a poet and not really that famous, but she's published so I think she counts. And a bunch more, if I stopped to think about it.
